Esther deJong, CNM, MPH

esther dejong nurse midwifeEsther received her nurse-midwifery education at the Medical University of S. Carolina in 1981 and her Masters of Public Health at Tulane in 1996. She has over 25 years of midwifery experience in a variety of birth settings. She owned a birth center and did home births in Gainesville Florida in the 1980s'. Since moving to New Orleans with young children in 1991, she has worked in hospital based practices. Esther was part of the only previous nurse-midwifery group practice in New Orleans, WomanCare at Lakeland Medical Center, and has more recently worked with Drs. Labadie and Labadie on the West Bank. She has two teenage children who were both delivered by midwives at home.

I am very excited to be working with Cathy to offer midwifery care to the women of New Orleans. Pregnancy is such an exciting and important time in a woman's life and I am honored to be involved with each client and her family. I respect and admire the normalcy of labor and birth and enjoy guiding each woman along her birthing path. I am pleased to offer women the comfort and alternatives that are available at Family Birthing Center at Touro Infirmary. I also enjoy providing gynecological care to women of all ages.

Catherine Badeaux, CNM, MS

cathy badeaux nurse midwifeCathy was born in Morgan City, Louisiana. She attended Charity Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a labor and delivery nurse for over 10 years. She received a BS and MS at the University of Massachusetts Boston and a certificate in midwifery at the University of Rhode Island.

Cathy is committed to the education of women in the health care setting and the role of midwife essential in attaining that goal. She worked in a variety of settings providing care for women including the criminal court system as an advocate and counselor for battered women and grief counselor for women experiencing a loss.

Cathy is experienced in using water for comfort and support for laboring women. She initiated water birth services at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, Massachusetts, as well as Kenner Regional Medical Center in Kenner, Louisiana, where water birth (over 100) was offered as a regular option for women. This wonderful tool for laboring women is continued at Touro Infirmary as well as other comfort options.

I believe that all women have a right to good prenatal care as well as safe childbirth regardless of their stations in life. I believe that pregnancy and birth is a time of immense change in a woman's life, and can be a source of strength and empowerment. Midwives begin with the premise or belief that pregnancy and other life cycle transitions are healthy and normal in women's lives. I support women in their vision of childbirth by providing information and identifying their unique physical, social and emotional needs.
